Frequently Asked Questions
All the time, we get pupils call us with their driving related questions, so we thought we would answer some of our most frequently asked questions here! Can’t seem to find the answer to a question you have? You can give us a call, or you can send us an email.
At Drive247 Oxford, the safety of both our pupils and instructors is extremely important to us. To protect both parties, we have made the difficult decision to postpone driving lessons for everyone except key workers. If you are a key worker on the frontline of the COVID-19 response, you will still be allowed to take driving lessons and tests. Our partner company will be able to help you with driving lessons for key workers and intensive courses.
To start your driving lessons, you need to be 17 years old and have a provisional license. You can obtain a provisional license by going to the GOV.UK website and filling out an online application, or you can get a D1 form from your local post office and apply that way. It can take 1-2 weeks for a provisional license to arrive once you have sent off your application.
You should bring your provisional license (photo card). If you have any driving experience already, you should bring any notes or progress reports you have. You should wear shoes that have a thin sole, as this helps with the clutch control which requires some sensitivity. If you wear glasses please bring these also.
If you’re a beginner, on your first lesson your instructor will take some notes from your provisional license and get to know you as a person and establish your driving goals. The instructor will drive you to a quiet location, whilst giving you a commentary drive. When you get to a suitable location, you’ll swap seats with the instructor and learn all the controls of the vehicle. Then, you will be taught how to move off and drive the car! Once the lesson is over, the instructor will drive you back to your home and rebook you in for your next lesson.
Everyone is different and needs a different amount of lessons to get passed. On average, it takes our pupils 26 hours to pass. Which is a fraction of the 67 hour national average.
If you would like a better indication of how many lessons you will need, our assessment lesson would be perfect for you.
We provide a range of learning vehicles, from Citroen DS3 to Ford Fiesta, we can find the right car and instructor to suit you.
You can book your theory test any time, however we would say to have a few lessons first, as you can ask your driving instructor about any questions you’re unsure of. Also, driving and the theory go hand in hand, so you’ll be revising for your theory throughout your lessons without even knowing it!
Only book your practical driving test once you’re nearly ready and your instructor has told you to. Booking the test when you’re nearly ready means that as you approach your test, the lessons you take will perfect your driving and you’ll take the test just as soon as you’re ready. Meaning you don’t waste any time!
Yes, as long as the instructor believes that you are ready to take your test, you can use the car you learned in. If you would prefer, you can also use your own vehicle if you have one.
